Biography
Joana was born in Heidelberg, Germany.
She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), where she conducted her thesis in Prof. Dr. le Noble’s lab studying vascular development in zebrafish. After her Bachelor’s, she spent a year in industry, gaining experience in clinical studies and project coordination before starting her Master’s in Molecular Biosciences with a major in Neuroscience at Heidelberg University.
During her Master’s, she completed several lab rotations covering diverse topics such as threat escape behavior, ALS, and brain injury, including a research stay at the University of Oslo. For her Master’s thesis at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in the lab of Porf. Dr. Frank Winkler, she investigated how intrinsic calcium oscillations influence the behavior of brain metastatic cancer cells within the field of Cancer Neuroscience.
Beyond her fascination for neuroscience, development, and microscopy, Joana is passionate about data science and machine learning and enjoys exploring their potential to advance biological research. In her free time, she loves traveling as well as cooking, cycling, playing squash and spending time with friends and family.
