Joel was born in Switzerland and studied biology and bioinformatics at the University of Zurich. Before joining the lab, he worked on automated target detection and image acquisition in electron microscopy at the Center for Microscopy and Image Analysis of the University of Zurich and on astrocytic influences on interneuron activations at the Janelia Research Campus (Virginia, US). He joined the Pelkmans lab in 2016 as a Fast Track student. During his Master’s thesis, he worked on a CRISPR/Cas9-based approach for genetic perturbation screening. Now, he is investigating induced pluripotent stem cells and their subcellular reorganization during differentiation.
